I came across this web site last night that had a few more stats:

Every aspect of life in Plaquemines Parish was fundamentally altered by the devastating impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The damage, its impact and the needs that have been created are summarized in this section.

Economic and Workforce Development

  • Just 218 out of 744 businesses have reopened
  • There were 294 unemployment claims as of December 3, 2005r 3, 2005

  • The November 2005 unemployment rate was 7.4%
  • Parish officials estimate that 80% of the Plaquemines Parish citrus orchards were destroyed as a result of the hurricanes
    • Citrus represents a $7-8 million industry in the parish, yielding income of approximately $5-7,000 per acre
    • Recovery (fruit production) will be at least 5 years from time of planting
  • 11 of the 13 ice houses used by the commercial seafood industry are not in operation, severely impacting that industry’s ability to operate.
    • In 2003, the fishing industry was worth approximately $59 million
  • Most of the marinas and docks within the parish were significantly damaged or destroyed
  • Only 20% (153) of 763 commercial fishing vessels are operable, severely impacting the commercial fishing industry.

So I was thinking about the logistics of this trip and what it will take to send 100+ people 2000+ miles away from home. Here are some of the stats that were given to me from our last meeting:

  • There are 100 + people attending
  • 70+ Students have sacrificed their spring break to lend a helping hand
  • 30+ DEC members have sacrificed a weeks vacation that would normal be spent with family
  • Over 2000 meals will be cooked and served (can you imagine the dishes that need cleaning)
  • Over 5000+ bottles of water because we can’t drink the water there
  • 700+ showers with only 6 working showers and 80 gal of hot water who’s not showering
  • There are 10 home work sites projects
  • We need 18 rental vehicles, the nearest Home Depot is 65+ miles away
  • We will have to rent tools and purchase materials on-site because they can’t carry them on the plane

Some homes are near completion and require a small amount of money and Read the rest of this entry »

Many of you have asked about the mission trip I’m attending in Louisiana in a few weeks. I thought I’d fill you in on the details.

I am going with a group of 30 people from Durham Evangelical Church and about 75 UNH college students. We are going to an area about 65 miles south of New Orleans called Buras. It was one of the first places hit by hurricane Katrina and the area is still divested. The purpose of our trip is to work on completing the rebuilding of about 15 homes, as well as to build relationships with the people of Buras, the college students (most of whom are not Christians) and each other.

I feel blessed to have been chosen to participate in this trip. Read the rest of this entry »
