As we head off to Haiti this week many have asked…. “What are you going to plant”… well we have a TON of varieties of fruits and vegetables that we are bringing down… but this one in particular is a pretty amazing vegetable !….
Known as the ‘miracle tree’
These trees have been identified as the vegetable with the highest nutritional value among many types of food species studied. Easy to cultivate and resistant to drought, the Moringa tree produces abundant leaves with a high concentration of proteins, vitamins, and minerals: 100 grams of fresh Moringa leaves provide the same amount of protein as an egg, as much iron as a steak, as much Vitamin C as an orange, and as much calcium as a glass of milk.
Much of the plant is edible by humans or by farm animals. The leaves are rich in protein, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, and minerals. A 100-g portion of fresh moringa leaves has 9.3 g protein, 434 mg calcium, 404 mg potassium, 738 μg vitamin A, and 164 mg vitamin C.
Feeding the high-protein leaves to cattle has been shown to increase weight gain by up to 32% and milk production by 43 to 65%. The seeds contain 30 to 40% oil that is high in oleic acid, while degreased meal is 61% protein. The defatted meal is a flocculant and can be used in water purification to settle out sediments and undesirable organisms.
Two or three trees in a courtyard are sufficient for needs of one family… we have over 100 seeds we are taking down and will help with making the orphange more self sustainable…
